Remote Assistance and Windows Vista

I was recently trying to help out a friend with a problem they were having on their laptop and so decided I’d give Remote Assistance a go.  I’ve used Remote Assistance in Windows XP quite and bit and I’m a big fan.  I’ve even used it to help out my sister who lives in Japan some 6000 miles away with great success.

Initially I couldn’t help my friend out :(  they could request assistance OK and i could accept but a few seconds later i would get error message.  I was fairly sure it was the Vista firewall, so i asked my friend to turn it off and that sorted it straight away.  Now i wouldn’t recommend anyone out there to turn off their Vista firewall.  I personally think the Vista firewall is a big feature that works well and offers a lot over its XP counterpart.  So how do you use Vista and Remote Assistance securely?  Follow the steps below!

  1. Open Windows Firewall… Start button –> Control Panel –> Security –> Windows Firewall
  2. Click Allow a program through Windows Firewall. (If you’re prompted for confirmation then confirm)
  3. Under Program or port, select the check box next to Remote Assistance, and then click OK

Hope u find this useful :)
